Restorative

Porcelain Crowns

When a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to hold, a crown covers and splints what remains so the tooth can go back to work.

Crown or bridge

Rebuilding a tooth, or replacing one

A crown covers a tooth that is still there but too damaged, cracked or heavily filled to hold together on its own. It restores the shape and takes the chewing forces the remaining tooth structure can no longer handle safely.

A bridge replaces a tooth that is gone. Crowns on the teeth either side of the gap support a replacement tooth in the middle, fixed permanently in place.

Which one you need is a question of whether the tooth can be saved. We will tell you plainly, and where an implant would serve you better than a bridge, we will say that too.

Materials

Choosing what it is made of

The right material depends on where the tooth sits, how much force it takes, and how much it shows when you smile.

Zirconia

Exceptionally strong and durable, zirconia suits back teeth and bridges that handle heavy chewing forces. Modern zirconia is also convincingly tooth-coloured, combining strength with a natural appearance.

Porcelain

Prized for its lifelike translucency, all-porcelain restorations reflect light the way natural enamel does, which makes them the first choice for front teeth and anything that shows when you smile.

Porcelain fused to metal

A time-tested option pairing a strong metal core with a porcelain exterior. Reliable strength with a natural appearance, particularly useful for longer-span bridges.

The process

From scan to permanent fit

We scan digitally rather than taking putty impressions. For many single crowns we can design, mill and fit the same day with CEREC, which removes the temporary and the second appointment entirely.

I

Exam & digital scan

We examine the tooth and take a quick, comfortable digital scan. No putty trays, and the scan is accurate enough to design from immediately.

II

Tooth preparation

The tooth is gently shaped to make room for the restoration, under local anesthetic. For a bridge, the supporting teeth either side are prepared at the same time.

III

Fabrication

Your crown or bridge is made from the material chosen for that tooth. With CEREC, a single crown is milled in the office while you wait; laboratory cases take a couple of weeks with a temporary in place.

IV

Final fit & bond

We check the fit, the bite and the colour, then bond it permanently. Adjustments are made before anything is cemented, not afterward.

FAQ

Crown & bridge questions, answered

How long do they last?

With good hygiene and regular checkups, ten to fifteen years is typical and many last considerably longer. What usually fails is the tooth or gum underneath, not the porcelain.

Will it look natural?

Yes. Shade, shape and translucency are matched to the teeth around it. Most patients cannot pick out their own crown in a mirror.

Is the procedure uncomfortable?

The area is fully numbed and most patients feel only pressure. IV sedation is available with Dr. Fisk for anyone who would rather not be aware of it.

How do I care for it?

Brush and floss as normal. A bridge needs a floss threader or interdental brush to clean underneath the replacement tooth, which matters more than people expect.

Crown, bridge or implant?

It depends on whether the tooth can be saved and how many teeth are involved. A crown saves the tooth you have; a bridge or an implant replaces one that is gone.

Do you use digital scanning?

Yes. A wireless intraoral scanner replaces putty impressions. It is faster, more comfortable and more accurate, and it feeds straight into same-day CEREC milling.
